Concurrent with the inauguration of its third president, Patrick Henry Community College is unveiling a new branding strategy to communicate its commitment to strengthen service to its students and the community, according to college officials. 

A new logo, which comprises a compass along with the college name, depicts the mission of “Charting the Course for the Next 50 Years: Together Forward.”

PHCC officials decided to announce the new branding initiative along with the inauguration of Dr. Angeline Godwin because it is the official recognition of a change in leadership and the more than 50 years that the college has served the community, according to PHCC Public Relations and Marketing Manager Kris Landrum. 

Godwin will be inducted as PHCC’s third president on Friday, April 25. She was preceded as president by Dr. Max Wingett, who served for 34 years, and Sherman S. Dutton, who was the college’s founding president from 1962 to 1978.

“This is a significant milestone in PHCC’s history,” Landrum said. “We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2012 and are gearing up for another 50 years and beyond as an integral member of our community educationally, culturally and economically.”

The new branding is a part of ongoing strategic planning process at the college and shows an excitement in the prospects for the future of PHCC, according to Godwin.  She said the PHCC Foundation had previously conducted research for rebranding and settled on the compass logo because it ties in so well with the existing college slogan, “From Here, You Can Go Anywhere.”

In order to maintain compatibility and a unified image across campus, the logo was adopted as the new college brand.

PHCC joined the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) in 1971, adopting its statewide logo, followed by an official college seal the following year. In the mid-1970s, a new college logo was created, and in 1998, Gerry Bannan, professor of fine art, created the sunburst logo used for the past 16 years.

The new logo will slowly phase in as new supplies are ordered and materials are printed. During this transition, both old and new logos will be in circulation and visible to the public, but Landrum said she’s hoping PHCC will complete the transition within a year.
