Joyce Martin graduated from PHCC in 1989 with an Associate in Arts and Sciences in General Studies. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in English/ Journalism/ Communications from Averett University, with a minor in Spanish. She is retired as the Director of Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services, where she worked since 1975 with the exception of the four years dedicated to pursuing full-time higher education. Martin’s community service activities have included serving on the Henry County Community Policy and Management Team, National Business College Advisory Board, SafetyNet Board, Financial Literacy Team, West Piedmont Better Housing Coalition, and the Virginia League of Social Services Executives. In 1995, she was named a Woman of Distinction by Girls Scouts of America.
