Central Virginia Community College, Danville Community College, Patrick Henry Community College, Southside Virginia Community College, and Southwest Virginia Community College are in the process of proposing an Associate in Applied Science Degree and Certificate Program in Sustainable Agribusiness Management for Fall 2011.
The curriculum is designed for students interested in owning or managing an agribusiness, farm, nursery, or greenhouse. The strong emphasis on business is also perfect for students who plan to work full-time and farm part-time. A focus on sustainability insures smart use of land and environmental resources that preserve rural Virginia for generations to come. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college can complete a General Studies Degree and take the agribusiness courses as electives. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech has a guaranteed articulation agreement.
The curriculum will also focus on emerging technologies and economic development opportunities in renewable energy production, local food marketing, agri-tourism, hydroponics, farmaceuticals, and other evolving enterprises to prepare students for the exciting future of 21st century agriculture.
Students will attend traditional classes and also participate in labs on actual farms and agribusinesses. A related internship experience is required to insure students have the experience they need to be successful.
