Earn college credits while still in high school!
Patrick Henry Community College offers Dual Enrollment courses for high school juniors and seniors through its Accelerated Learning Department. This program allows students to fulfill their high school requirements while simultaneously receiving college credit. The Accelerated Learning Department works in partnership with the five high schools located in its service region. Participating schools are: Bassett High School, Magna Vista High School, Martinsville High School, Patrick County High School, Franklin County High School , The Piedmont Governor’s School for Math, Science and Technology and Carlisle School.
The manner in which the classes are delivered depends on the courses selected and can vary at different schools. Some classes are completed in the high school classroom, some require additional coursework, and others are offered in lab settings.
Who is eligible for Dual Enrollment?
Enrollment is offered to juniors and seniors at the participating high schools. Students who register for Dual Enrolment classes must meet all admission and course requirements as other PHCC students.
What are the benefits of Dual Enrollment?
Students who participate in Dual Enrollment have the opportunity to get a head start on their college education while in high school which can greatly reduce expenses and the time required to complete college. They become familiar with the rigor of college level courses and have access to all PHCC resources including

- Use of college library and electronic resources
- Linked to the SmartThinking on-line tutoring website 24/7.
All college-level courses are taught by faculty who meet PHCC requirements. The types of Dual Enrollment programs offered include transferable classes such as English, History, Government, Biology and Math. These classes are offered at the participating high schools or may be delivered through classes the Piedmont Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science and Technology, the ACE Academy, and the Patrick County D2 program. The curriculum offered at the Governor’s School, the ACE Academy and the Patrick D2 program is designed to include coursework that could result in the student receiving enough college credit classes to be awarded an Associates’ degree upon their high school graduation.
In addition to the classes already mentioned, PHCC has a strong Career and Technical program that includes a variety of classes. These courses include Administration of Justice, Agri-business, Automotive and Autobody, Building Trades, Computer Aided Drafting (CADD), Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Electricity, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Horticulture, and Motorsports.
How do I register??
STEP ONE: Complete course requests for your high school courses with your school counselor. Be sure to ask which Dual Enrollment courses are being offered at your particular school when you are deciding on your schedule for the upcoming year.
STEP TWO: Complete a Patrick Henry Community College Application for Admission. These are available in your high school guidance office. You may also download the application. BE SURE ALL INFORMATION HAS BEEN FILLED OUT COMPLETELY. Your application can then be turned in to your high school guidance counselor or the Career Coach. Once your application has been processed you will receive a letter from the college that will include your student ID number. You should then complete the Virginia Placement Test. Check with your counselor to see if the test is being offered at your high school OR you can take one on PHCC’s campus in the IATCC.
STEP THREE: Complete the Virginia Placement Test administered by PHCC. Testing is scheduled and delivered on the high school campus or on the PHCC main campus. Your guidance office will announce test dates when testing is scheduled at your school. Students must have their college-assigned emplID and a state issued photo ID to test. The test is administered on the computer and calculators are not allowed – a computer calculator is available when allowed. Accommodations may be made for students with documented disabilities through the PHCC Student Support Services office. Contact Mr. Scott Guebert at (276) 656-0257 to schedule an appointment.
How much does it cost?
Patrick Henry Community College partners with Henry, Patrick and Franklin County schools and the City of Martinsville to deliver dual enrollment courses at no cost to parents and students.
Where can I get more information?
Talk with your guidance counselor or visit the PHCC Career Coach office in your high school. He/she will have a listing of the Dual Enrollment courses offered at your school.
A “Parent’s Night” informational meeting will be held at each high school this fall. Additional information will be posted on our website and announcements will be made through your students’ high school.
