Carolyn R. Byrd Math Lab

PHCC Carolyn R. Byrd Math Lab: The math lab is located on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center. The lab provides free individual and group tutoring, and supplemental instruction for high risk math courses. You attend on a voluntary basis. Math assistance is only guaranteed during the open lab hours. The goal of the lab is to provide math instruction and assistance to students in all levels of math offered by PHCC. Walk-ins during Math Lab hours (no appointment necessary) are the primary means of receiving math tutoring and are always welcomed. Scheduled appointments may be available for certain math classes.

Summer 2016 Math Lab Hours:

Monday          1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday         10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Wednesday   1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. 
Thursday        10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. 
Friday              10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 

The Math Lab is available to current PHCC students working on math related topics. The lab provides free individual and group tutoring. The goal of the lab is to provide math instruction to students in all levels of math. 

When you come in: You will likely be greeted by a mathematics tutor. Tutors are easily identified by their gold PHCC vests. You may ask for assistance immediately, or choose just to work on your own for a while in the Lab and organize your questions as you go, then ask for help - it is all up to you.

Study Groups are scheduled with a tutor for most math classes on a regular basis as a supplement to selected courses. The Math Lab hosts study groups on mathematics and other subjects, based on student demand and tutor availability. If you would like a group set up, please contact Samuel Prillaman (phone number and e-mail above) for details.


  • Several course textbooks and solution manuals for use in the Math Lab.
  • Other textbooks for extra study.
  • Eight Dell laptops for math course use, such as connecting to MyMathLab.
  • Virginia Placement Test: the VPT MathSite provides sample math problems and links to online resources that correspond to each sub-unit of Units 0-3 of the VPT-Math. All of the recommended online resources are free, and include popular sites such as the Khan Academy, National Repository of Online Courses (NROC) Developmental Math course, and

Developmental Math Assessment Center (DMAC) – West B102 :

This lab is open to everyone and is also designated for tutoring for developmental math students.  (On-level math students should use the Math Lab as listed above.)
