PHCC offers Creative Kids College each summer. Our goal is to provide unique learning opportunities to children ages 10-14. A variety of programs are offered to inspire creativity and give kids an opportunity to explore career opportunities.

Math in Everyday Life

Math Camp will demonstrate how everyday math, recreation and life skills are used to balance the quality of daily activities. A licensed middle school math teacher will demonstrate how math is used in our daily life. The camp will be very hands-on to create projects and spend time in recreational and physical activities. The camp will include a field trip to Philpott Dam and information about the production of hydroelectric power, and a STEM lesson will be taught by one of NCI's professors of engineering.

The Art + Science of Color

Create beautiful art projects while exploring the science behind them! Taught by an artist and former science museum educator, students will do a variety of hands-on activities, including creating optical illusions, bubble paintings, kaleidoscopes, exploding Alka-seltzer rocket paintings, and more. Learn about the visible light spectrum and how artists use color theory.

3D Printing Camp

Enter the world of 3D printing and learn how these machines can be used to print prototypes, jewelry, chocolate, pizza, building materials, and even human tissue! Students will learn the digital design process using Autodesk 123D apps and use the MakerBot 3D printer to make several projects in plastic to take home.

Creative Thinking & Design in Everyday Life

During this weeklong camp, students will have opportunities to brainstorm and be encouraged to design projects from creative resources in the community. Students will be introduced to brainstorming and how the collaborative process of thinking outside of the box can stimulate new ideas to produce useful products from everyday resources. Teamwork, brainstorming, and creative design will be key components of the weeklong camp. This camp will also include a visit to the Fab Lab.

Cupcake Wars

Love cupcakes? This is the camp for you! Following recipes, careful measuring and decorating instruction will result in a week of delicious treats. The week will end with a Cupcake Wars Competition.

Fueling Creativity: Junior Motorsports Camp

Learn about a career in motorsports that includes mechanical engineering,electronics, and mechanical design. Students will build a model race car and race it using skills learned in class.

Technology in Everyday Life

NCI’s Technology Camp provides exciting learning experiences demonstrating the everyday use of innovations in technology. Students will use various devices to engage in activities that will allow them to make connections to their lives as students and beyond. Students will be encouraged to use their imaginations, create a mechanical device, and examine some fantastic uses of technology in our region.

Clay Camp (2 weeks)

Come get your hands dirty! In week 1, students will work with clay and learn different hand-building techniques, including pinch, coil, and slab-building. Create projects like sculptures, vases, bowls, and pots! In week 2, after the pieces have had a chance to dry and be fired, in the kiln, students will learn the techniques for surface decoration and glazing in a variety of colors and textures.

Artist Adventures Camp

Spark your creativity and explore a variety of artistic techniques! Students will learn about drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture, and using animal fibers to create works of art.

Architectural Model & Design Camp

Using AutoDesk Revit Architecture 2012 and Building Animation software, students will create a virtual model of a house that will be used to create a set of residential drawings including floor plans, elevations, sections, and multiple 3D renderings.

Junior Ace of Cakes

Do you want to be an Ace of Cakes? Do you love to bake your cake and eat it, too? Whether you want to learn how to make crazy confections or traditional three-layer cakes, this camp is the one for you. Students will mix, bake, fill, carve and finish a creation.

Fab Lab Innovation Camp

During this four-day camp, students will learn to conceptualize, design, and prototype ideas for new products. Students will use various Fabrication Lab equipment including plasma cutters, laser cutters, 3D printers, and more to manufacture their ideas. Students will design and produce a variety of projects to take home, like t-shirts, stickers, and 3D-printed objects.

CADD Engineering Modeling & Design Camp

Using AutoDesk Inventor 2012 Adaptive Modeling Software, students will create sophisticated engineering part models, drawings, assemblies and assembly animations.

Junior Top Chef

Become a Junior Top Chef and explore the delicious world of cooking. You’ll get hands-on experience using kid-friendly recipes. You’ll also learn proper kitchen safety and how to set a table and serve a meal. No experience is necessary, just a love of cooking and a willingness to try new things!

Creature and Character Modeling

Students will learn to use Autodesk Mudbox to create creatures and characters using a virtual clay modeling environment software. Students will start off with a default shape of clay and deform, sculpt and shape the clay into creatures and characters. Students then overlay surface textures and paints to create anything from Mickey Mouse to a T-Rex in 3D.

Students will be able to print photos of their creations.
